Take learning to new heights

Learning, from the day we are able to understand things, is always hanging on the lips, I don’t know why we want to study, for whom? It was only as I grew older that I gradually understood the importance of learning.

During the student phase, how to study correctly and how to study well have become a very important topic in the growth stage. Generally in the learning style, there are both cognitive and emotional levels. From a cognitive perspective, a learning style can be defined as a “system of learning strategies and knowledge acquisition” to provide “the most appropriate learning conditions and environment”. From the emotional level, the emotional characteristics such as motivation, attention, and personality in the learning style will occur before cognition, thus forming the corresponding learning type.

Learners learn through different methods and use different learning styles or learning strategies according to the characteristics of their innate and surrounding environment. Personal traits and preferences are formed through the genetic structure and character development of learners and continue to develop through learning motivation and adaptation to the learning environment. At this point, learning styles change over time, but learners’ preferences don’t change easily.

Each of us is unique, everyone has different personality traits and special learning styles; The type of learning affects the ability to learn and the mindset of the individual, shaping our lives. Knowing your individual learning type allows you to improve your learning efficiency and revive your good grades by finding the most suitable learning style!

Learning Theory 1: Learning Style Theory - Gerry's Onion model

Figure: Gerry's onion diagram in learning style theory

The characteristic of the Gerry model is that the theoretical characteristics of each layer are inseparable and closely related. From the inmost center personality style theory to the outermost theory of teaching preferences, there are all connected, and one layer influences the next. Furthermore, the more the theory is internalize, the more stable and difficult it is to change, so it is difficult to be influenced by teaching. Theory that is more externalize, is more unstable and susceptible to the environment, and relatively easy to change. The Gerry onion model includes almost all relevant learning style theories, and later theories can almost be grouped into one of the layers. The model consists of three layers. In the inner center layer, learning style theory is based on the cognitive personality style of the learner, which is the style of basic personality characteristics. Middle layer – the style of which information is collected and processed, and the outermost layer – the style of interaction and academic preferences in the course and its environment.

Learning Theory 2: KOLB's information perception and information processing, four learning styles structured by two dimensions

Figure: Gerry's onion diagram in learning style theory

Kolb believes that the way a person perceives and processes information in the learning process determines how he learns. This learning style theory is based on the theory of experiential learning, using new experiences to continuously improve the thinking system formed by the previous experience, this process can be known as “learning”, and the learning process cycle consists of four interrelated links – concrete experience, abstract generalization, reflective observation and active experimentation.

First, learners observe and reflect on their concrete experiences in a variety of ways, then draw conclusions through an abstract cognitive process, and finally act on that conclusion. Each link does not occur spontaneously, because the individual has different degrees of preference for the four links, thus showing different types of learning styles, namely “divergence”, “assimilation”, “concentration”, “Conformant”.

About Individual Learning Type Reports

The “Individual Learning Type Reports” is based on the analysis of five dimensions and ten learning types, allowing you to have a more comprehensive and thorough understanding of your thinking patterns, learning habits and characteristics.

Report content and index

Expressive type

Expressive people actively seek out information and prefer to study with others, group activities, or panel discussion.

Thoughtful type

Reflective people look for internal information, before the real learning begins, they will first carry out countless simulated behaviors, constantly analyzing, like to either alone or with a few friends, think quietly, learn, and fully understand before taking action.

Concrete type

Concrete people use the five senses to receive information, prefer real, actual situations, like to learn logical theories, and prefer to use existing knowledge flexibly.

Abstract

Abstract people use their imagination to collect information as much as possible, and tend to recognize meaning and relationships, and rely more on their own insight, so they are more inclined to creative and open learning style.

Topic-type

Subject-oriented people pursue logical objective information analysis, are not affected by personal factors such as emotions, prefer structured courses with clear goals, and are more suitable for learning objective data and theoretical basis.

Connected

Connected people rely on the principle of people-centered to collect information, are easily influenced by their own and others’ emotions, and relate learning content to interpersonal relationships for understanding.

System-based

Systematic people perceive information abstractly, and process it dialectically, like organized and logical information perception and processing process, and will clarify their learning goals and final results at the early stage of learning.

Open

Open people are the most susceptible to the learning environment, prefer to explore and learn freely in an unplanned, unorganized open environment, and prefer to choose changeable topics and learning goals.

Left brain type

Hearing and language are more developed, and information is processed according to system, analysis, and logic. Like to divide the problem into small parts and deal with it in stages, and grasp the cause, process, result and other information of the problem.

Right brain type

Developed in terms of vision, processing information through intuitive, space, and overall structure. Prefer to explore the whole, find the patterns, comprehensively process, and observe things from different angles.

應用建議

Children
  • Plan a learning model suitable for the child and give appropriate growth and development materials.
Adolescents
  • Develop the potential of adolescents, improve learning ability and find appropriate learning methods and models.
Adults
  • Improve work efficiency, promote the ability to improve themselves, and achieve career development goals.

What can the report bring me?

By analyzing the types of learning, this report can help you better understand your personal learning patterns and habits, improve your learning ability and efficiency, and maximize the learning effect if learners can understand their own learning style. Be clear about your own characteristics, flexibly use your strengths, and finally find a learning method that suits you. This helps with career planning and increases a sense of accomplishment for learners and ultimately leads you to success.

In addition, schools can provide students with information through the reports, so as to improve students' learning styles and methods, and teachers can understand students' learning styles and use this as a basis to arrange the content of lectures and create a suitable environment to help students learn more effectively. At the same time, it provides students with better learning opportunities in order to cope with the different requirements of different students to improve the learning effect.
